... infoRacing with 31 miles/h over a cornfield – the 10th Moped-Race of TaakenOnce a year ambitious moped fans gather in a small village near the city of Bremen to celebrate their favourites sport: At the Moped-Race in Taaken
The names of the racing teams sound promising and self-conscious: “Mercury Racing Team“, ”Hurricane“ or “Primer Racing“. But also self-displaying team names are not rare: “Stubbles-Hobble-Team“, “Henpecked Husbands“ or “The Piston-jammers“. 33 teams have lined up this time to chase their 50cc bikes for 6 hours over a cut down cornfield at the outskirts of the village of Taaken. But there are restrictions for the chase. The racing regulations set the speed limit at 31 miles per hour, which is strictly monitored with high-tech radar-guns.
Everything here reminds of the big, professional motorsport races – everything is present: Pit Lane, Track Marshals, Free Practice, Qualifying, and the Race. Teams of 3 motorcyclists take their turns in order to survive the 6 hours. The kick-off is done by a spectacular “Le Mans”-style start, where the “Cornfield-Pilots” have to run to their bike first before they hit the road.
After almost exactly 6 hours the “Primer Racing”-Team crossed the finish line first. “Primer Racing” has circled a total of 280 rounds and even has managed the quickest lap time: 1 Min. 8 Sec. 658 Hundredth. Not everybody was so lucky. The race was already over for the “High Trees of Horstett”-Team after the second round.
